Bit of History - March 22, 2023

In 1960, the Shepard Locker and Grocery store was sold to Elmore and Mayme Snary of Trenton who then renamed the business the Ridgeway Market.  They continued running the business as it was for a few months, then announced that they were closing the grocery and selling the stock to Burl Scott of Scott Grocery to start a new experimental venture:  making turkey rolls. With an abundance of turkeys from local growers who were seeking a “broader market” for their product, Elmore Snary thought that a turkey roll that was cooked, processed, covered with a casing, and refrigerated might sell well and be cheaper to produce than a similar frozen turkey roll. Nine employees processed the turkeys and the newly formed Ridgeway Turkey Growers Association assisted with marketing and supplying birds. Snary also purchased a “picker” that would pluck a tom or two hens in 35 seconds to speed up production.  The rolls came in several flavors and sold through local grocery stores.

However, in May, 1962, Snary put an ad into the Bethany Republican-Clipper that the locker would close in 30 days and everyone needed to pick up their meat before then.  He then sold the locker to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pash and he and his wife moved to San Diego, CA.
