Bit of History - December 13, 2023

Ridgeway kids have been writing to Santa and the papers have been publishing their letters for over a century.  On December 20, 1893, the Bethany Clipper published these letters from Ridgeway children:

Pearl Campbell wrote:  Mr. Santa Claus:  Please, I want a nice new doll already dressed.  I am a little girl 6 years old.

Sarah Simpson:  Dear Santa Claus:  I want you to remember me when you come around with your presents.  I am a little girl 8 years old.  I live on father’s farm and I want a nice present.  I want a nice toy watch.

Max Gutridge wrote this letter in 1909:  Dear Santa Claus:  I hope you will remember all little boys and girls this year, especially those who are sick and crippled.  Iw would like a new knife, a Hiawatha Primer and all the nuts and candy you think it is safe for one boy to eat.  Hoping you will have enough to go around.

This child was concerned about Santa and his team’s safety in this letter from 1908:  Dear Santa Claus:  I live 10 miles north of Bethany.  My name is Cleo Gibson.  I am 8 years old.  I would like to have a pair of skates and a teddy bear.  Our chimney is small and you might get fast, so you’d better come in the door, and the house roof might be slick and your reindeers might fall and break some of their legs.  So with kind thoughts, I will close.

Finally, Lucille Leazenby wrote this letter in 1906:  Dear Clipper Santa Claus — I thought  I would write to you and tell you what I want for Christmas.  I want a big doll, as I gave my old one to my little sister Ruth.  I want a story book.
