Bit of History - September 8, 2021

wish I could remember who gave me a copy of the Eagleville-Ridgeway Journal from August 6, 1958.  It floated up to the top of my tub of Ridgeway historical items and it is a neat little find. This was the third issue of this paper, but the publishers, Pokorny Publications of St. Joseph, MO, owned several newspapers in NW Missouri and SW Iowa.  The big story in this issue was the Ridgeway Little Britches which included a parade and events such as bronc riding, calf-riding and calf roping.  There was a cloverleaf pony race with three classes depending on the size of the pony and a sweetheart race for boy/girl teams.  Contestants needed to be 14 and under and had to participate in both the afternoon and evening performances.  The rodeo was sponsored by the Ridgeway Lions Club and the Foxhunters Association.

In other news, the Ridgeway Little League team was scheduled to play in tournaments in Gallatin and Cainsville.  George Tuggle was their coach and manager, and Rae Maxwell was the trainer.  Members of the team included Bruce Sittner, Billy Redinger, Bob Tuggle, Jim Tuggle, Ronald Bennett, Richard Bennett, Kennie Nible, Everett Harding, Danny Polley, Roger Warner, Dick Warner, Gary Kampman and Larry McCollum.  Ridgeway businesses advertised that you could “shop and save” by shopping in Ridgeway.  There were ads from Dr. Lake Brewer, Farmer’s National Bank, Scott Grocery, Polley’s Service Station, Stoner’s Drug Store, Ridgeway Mart and an unnamed business owner who wanted to retire and offered a “good going business that I will sell or trade. This is a good family business that will make plenty of money – gross as much as $75,000 yearly, in a town with good schools, churches and bank.”  I hope he got to enjoy his retirement.
