Bit of History - May 19, 2021

This week’s history comes from the June 15, 1949 issue of the Mercury-Herald.  The state highway commission accepted a bid for a new road to run east of Ridgeway from route A to route B for eight miles, including a new bridge over Big Panther Creek and a culvert over Little Panther Creek.  The low bidder was Knutson Guild Construction Company of Kansas City with a bid of $82, 722.  (Was this an extension of Route A from Ridgeway to Route B?  My husband and I weren’t sure.)  In another item, new safety devices were to be installed along Ridgeway streets.  These included stop signs, no U-Turn signs and speed limit signs.  Also, the fire hydrants were to be painted silver.

The movies that week were “Scatterbrain” with Judy Canova and Eddie Foy Jr on Saturday and “Dare Devil of the Clouds” on Wednesday.  Kirkley Chapel had Sunday School attendance of 24 and a collection of $3.58.  Rev. W. H. Ezell of the Methodist Church left for a week to attend a Pastor’s school and there were no services that week but Sunday School was held.  Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Andrick and Mr. and Mrs. I. T. Williams had dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Mussell(?) Williams near Gilman City.  (The Mercury-Herald may have had a typo there.)
