Bit of History - June 23, 2021

Shelly L.shared with me a little book that she owns titled “Ridgeway Methodists’ Favorite Recipes”, and we would both like some help in determining when this recipe book may have been printed.  It was printed by the Ridgeway Journal, which ceased operations in 1941, so we know the book is older than that.  On the inside of the front cover, the book lists H. E. Marshall as the pastor at the time and the officers of the Women Society of Christian Service.  Mrs. Carl Emery was president, Miss Velma Magee was Vice President, Mrs. Lee Neff was Secretary and Mrs. Oscar Bowman was treasurer.  The committee included Mrs. C. S. Bush, Mrs. H. E. Cox, Mrs. William Elliot, Mrs. Don Killough, and Mrs. William Waddilove.

The book contained some ads from Ridgeway businesses such Adams Grocery, White Auto Supply, Dr. James G. Miller (office in the New Ridgeway Hotel), Dr. Lake Brewer, Home Oil Company, Stoner’s Drug Store, and Ridgeway Lumber Co.  Mildred Maxwell bought an ad for the Ridgeway Beauty Shoppe, Dr. R. H. Beets advertised that he was an osteopathic physician and fitted glasses and Marvin Spence owned the Phillips Service station at the time.  I also found a few interesting recipes for Meat Shortcake, Variety Pie (made of left-over meat) and President Coolidge Custard Pie.  If you recognize any of these names or know when either the book was published or when Pastor Marshall was serving the Methodist Church, please let me or Shelly know.
