Bit of History - July 21, 2021

I would like to thank Marnell C. for sending to my husband and I a copy of “The Hooter Monthly”, the Ridgeway High School newspaper from 1982.  Staff members included Paul Reeder and Russ Simpson, editors, Bob Kunch and Eric Purdun covering sports, Jeanette Tuggle editing features, Ramona Pitts writing Notices and David Somervell and Charlie Tanner were the “fun section” editors.  Beth Schmille wrote an editorial on school spirit in this issue.  She and Karen Baker Preston were featured in the Senior Spotlight. Instead of a junior-senior play that year, the students decided to produce “The Sound of Music” and listed the students who would play each part.  Maria was played by Julie Gibson and Captain von Trapp was played by Jeff Hendren.

The girls’ softball team won their first game of the season against Pattonsburg 14-7 on September 30 but lost to Jameson 22-15 on Oct 1.  They ended their season with an overall record of 1-9.  The boys had a winning season of 6-4 overall, winning against Cainsville, Pattonsburg, and Jameport. Another article introduced the junior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams

The eighth grade challenged the seventh grade to a frog jumping contest.  The seventh grade entered Bonnie and the 8th grade’s frog was named Dan’l.   The 8th grade won and were presented with a flag.  There is quite a bit more news about student council elections, the FHA regional meeting, the art field trip to Graceland, annual staff announcements and cheerleading.  Old school papers are always fun to read and thank you, Marnell, for sending this to Tracy and I.
