Bit of History - April 7, 2021

I started browsing through old newspapers again.  I am planning a trip to the Harrison County Genealogy Society this week to read some of the old Ridgeway Journals, but for this week, I have some more bits from the June 8, 1949 edition of the “Mercury Herald”.  That week’s paper announced the May 28th marriage of Marvin Scott and Clara Viola “Rosy” Polley, and the deaths of Leo Wayne Scott and William Montgomery.  An Evangelistic Meeting was planned to be conducted at the High School starting Sunday, June 12.  Mr. R. F. Doyle from Pontiac, Michigan was slated to speak and Mr. and Mrs. Morrow were to lead the music.  Anyone “intrusted in the Glory Songs of Salvation” was invited to join the choir.  The Morrows were also leading a Vacation Bible School at the Christian Church.  All denominations were welcome to attend.

The movie that week was “Albuquerque” starring Randolph Scott, Gabby Hayes and Barbara Britton.  Arch Miles had an icebox for sale and Scott Grocery had cake mixes on special and offered free delivery.  In sports, Ridgeway beat Lamoni 8-4 in softball, but lost a hard-fought, 12 inning baseball game to Cainsville 3-2.
