I didn’t get the chance to go to the Genealogy library this week after all but found this gem via Newspapers.com. There was a report in the Feb. 18, 1938 issue of the St. Joseph News-Press of strange animal tracks found on the farm of county court Judge Frank Rinehart. The tracks were “sharply defined” and were preserved (with a plaster cast, I would assume). They were said to resemble a dog’s tracks but were 4 inches long and more than 3 inches wide and looked like the animal was loping rather than trotting.
The Rinehart children described the animal’s cries as “beginning like a mule’s bray and ending like a woman’s scream.” Does anyone remember this story or heard about it from family? Did anyone ever find this mysterious animal or have an idea what it could have been? I am very curious about this rest of this tale.
